A Little More About Me...

I have been an animal lover since the time I was born... literally have never met a horse, dog, cat, bird, bunny or other pet I didn't love.  OK, that could be a false statement as I have had a few "come to Jesus" moments with an Arabian stallion I was training for a big Arab show barn back in the 1980s, and there has been a cat that didn't really care for me, and possibly a dog that also felt the same way but those were the odd exceptions.

I have been riding since the soonest age that I could sign up for instruction--at around 8 years old, and a horse owner since my earliest teens through today.  I have saddle broken horses for the racetrack (Thoroughbreds) and for show (Arabians). I was an exercise jockey for a large stables during my high school years, which thinking back on that, I'm not sure how my parents allowed me to do that but I'm wondering if I didn't really tell them all the details. LOL I was the assistant trainer for a large Arabian stables in the 1980s during my college years when Arabs were the thing and commanded very high prices. I am currently much more laid back and my 21-year-old Polish Arab mare and I enjoy trail rides and hacking around the barn.

As for dogs, I grew up with a houseful of Whippets.  True story.  My parents owned Barrister Whippets and we spent many of my summers racing our dogs, out on a bike conditioning them, as well as showing them and obedience trialing them. My first Whippet, Trinket, and I went #1 Hound and #1 Whippet in the United States in obedience.  I was only 12 and refused to "yank" my best friend and instead used cut up hotdogs as training treats.  Little did I know that I was on the forefront of positive reinforcement training!

I currently live with three adorable Havanese (all had been shown and are now retired) and a very silly Lab-mix that we adopted out of the Durham shelter. In between, I have helped with Greyhound Rescue and owned three different Greyhounds, and I've owned and trained two beautiful Rottweilers--one was a rescue--and am unfortunately well aware of how devestating a bone cancer diagnosis can be to a pet owner...

I have been photographing dogs professionally since about 1990, when my first image was purchased and published in what was then the "AKC Gazette." Since then, I have photographed a wide range of breeds, as well as other animals editorially. My imagery has appeared in tons of books (mostly those published by Barron's Educational Series), and countless national and international pet magazines, as well as newspapers across the country.
